Hundreds of demonstrators carrying Tibetan and Indian flags marched through the streets of the northern Indian city of Dharmsala to pledge support for the Dalai Lama and voice their disapproval of China’s crackdown in the region.

Many of the roughly 500 protesters were local Indian businessmen who shouted slogans like “Keep fighting, Tibetans” and “Long Live the Dalai Lama”.

“India has had a long relationship with Tibetans,” said Ram Swarup, a prominent businessman in the area. “We are concerned about what’s happening in Tibet and are here to show our solidarity to the Tibetan people.”

Dharmsala is home to the Dalai Lama - the Tibetan spiritual leader - and the headquarters of his government-in-exile.

“We pray that the Dalai Lama’s peaceful efforts to negotiate with China bear fruit,” said Prem Sagar, an organiser of Saturday’s march.

The Dalai Lama was in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Saturday to lead a prayer session for his followers. His only comment to the media was: “Nothing to say.”

Tibetan activist groups in New Delhi also protested against China’s crackdown.

I’ve started a grassroots movement to collect Pledges to boycott the Olympic Sponsors unless they 1) convince the Chinese govt to stop the violence in Tibet or, 2) withdraw their support from the Beijing games.

By leaning on our American companies, we have the best chance of leaning on China. Please, visit my site and add your name to the pledge. I’m getting some hits now, but we’ll need thousands.
